Houses, Tunnels and Jumps

Things for your rats to explore under and over! Before you throw away cardboard boxes, toilet rolls and other plastic and cardboard tubes etc think whether the rats could benifit them.

Hammocks

You can buy them for £3-4 but you can also make them. All you need is a rectangle of fleece or non-frayng material and some metal rings. Hem the edge of the materal to stop it fraying and so the hammock won't tear then make four holes and attach the metal hoops. Hang in the cage and let those ratties chill.

Games
There are loads of games you can play with your rats. Just adapt what they like to do into a game! Below are a few I've played:

Pea Fishing
Get a shallow bowl or tub and fill with water. Add some frozen peas and watch them fish. Some will balance on the edge and others will dive right in! You could add some pebbles to make it harder for them to get the peas.

Wresling
Some rats love to play with your hand as if it were another rat. Chase them gently and wrestle like they do with each other they'll find it good fun and sometimes you can win and sometimes you can let them!

Tissues
Simply a box of tissues can provide hours of fun. The rats will first take out all the tissues and use them for bedding then they can play in the box. It's also great fun watching them run around with huge bits of tissue in their mouths!

Agility
*Up*
Stand on their hind legs. Just lift the treat straight up above them and they'll do it automatically.

*Walk*
This takes time but soon theyll get it. Start with the up movment then keeping the treat at the same height move it away from them a bit. The idea is to get them to walk on their hind legs.

*Down*
Oppersite to up - very useful when they climb up things they're not meant to!! just take treat down in front of their nose and theyll soon learn it!

*Jump*
Rats love to jump. Put them on one surface like a table and sit near it with a little distance away and coax them towards you. Get further apart.

*Through*
Obvious really. Get them to run though a tunnel etc. Just sit at the other end and coax them across.
