History

Rats belong to the rodent group of mammals. They are warm blooded and furry. Females give birth to live, hairless young.

Rats have always been seen as horrid, dirty and plague-carrying creatures. The idea of a Pet Rat to many people is revolting. Not many people realise that the notorious Black Rat (the so-called plague rat) is Rattus Rattus, while the popular Pet Rat is Rattus Norwiegicus.

Domestic rats are very different from their wild cousins! They have been bred for handling and they have a much more gentle and placid nature.

Pet Rats have been breed and kept for a long time. They were especially popular with the Victorian Upper class who would often keep 5-6 as for show in front of friends.

Today you are likely to see rats being sold at your local pet store as they make very popular and interesting pets for all ages.
